Craig W. Stanfill’s Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice is set in a futuristic, dystopian society where everything, from what you eat to where you live, is controlled by Artificial Intelligence. On the surface, this world seems perfect, the selfism, famine, disasters, and diseases of the past have been eliminated, but at what cost?

Kim has a better life than most. She has a good job working with The Artificial Intelligence Company, she lives in a reputable district, and lives a routine life set in place by the AIs she works with. This perfect world begins to lose its shine, when her best friend, Shan, comes back, and they go for a bike ride.

The use of the pronoun, I, was marked as taboo for humans, while it was used freely by AIs. This shows that humans were becoming dispersible just like Artificial Intelligence, while AIs were beginning to take the place of humans, controlling the lives of humans. The world Craig W. Stanfill created was wildly imaginative and crafted from his life working with Artificial Intelligence.

I loved the relationship between Kimberly and Kim. The fact that Kim’s AI, Kimberly, could try to protect Kim from other AIs, showed that the real villains were the Hierarchy. The AIs were only programmed to act based on their orders, and would glitch whenever they tried to function outside orders. I also loved how Shan’s return turned Kim’s world inside out, and forced her to make choices based on her moral compass.

The use of gender-neutral clothing and the use of feminine pronouns made it difficult to tell genders and buttressed the fact that the Artificial Intelligence and Hierarchy wanted a uniform world free of individual differences and a sense of self. The deviation to this is the reference to innie and outie, and genderism, a cruel offense, where an offender prefers sexual intimacy with only one gender. I could find nothing to dislike about this well-written and imaginative book.

I rate Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice five out of five stars because I loved the storyline in Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice. I also found Kim's progression from being depressed and trying to fit in to being a confident, brave girl, comfortable in her differences and firm in her moral judgments.

I could find no error in Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice. It is perfectly edited. I recommend this book to lovers of sci-fi and dystopian novels. I would advise that there should be readers discretion, because there are sex, drinking and drugging scenes.
