Review of Terms of Service
Human beings are born with the innate feeling of wanting to be free. Fortunately, they can enjoy their freedom under a well-defined set of laws. However, when the law becomes too stifling and one cannot enjoy basic emotional freedom such as holding hands, things are bound to get frisky. Meet Kim, who actually lives in such a world. Constantly controlled by a chip in her wrist and a host of all-seeing AIs, she has to ensure she is in their best books. Crossing the AIs for the smallest of mistakes could mean a reduction in your living standards ad worse eating tofu. Despite all these restrictions, Kim lives a fairly good life and works diligently as an AI trainer. One misstep with her friend Shan and her world drastically changes in an unexpected way. What she does not realize is that she might have just sold her soul to the devil version of the all-powerful AIs.
Terms of Service is a beautiful story of pain, duty diligence, and surprisingly love. The book has been written in the third person point of view giving the reader extensive information about the characters and the events surrounding their current position. I enjoyed the life and animation given to the AIs. While they are unemotional in normal circumstances, Craig W. Stanfill makes them humane within the VR. Kim’s emotional status has been powerfully communicated; her constant turmoil between duty and rebellion, her untenable love life, and her taste for the good life shine through the book. At the beginning of the book, the author communicates that the book is a translated version of the Panglobal language. I must commend the translation work as it is terrific. Surprisingly, there is a weird gender imbalance throughout the book.
I absolutely love this book, and I could not find any negative critique of Terms of Service. I also loved the title and its subtitle because of its witty nature. The book appears to be exceptionally well-edited, as there were no errors present in the book. However, there is a presence of moderate profanity.
I am happy to rate this book five out of five stars for the above reasons. The book is as entertaining as it is educative. It is packed with 19 chapters of wonder and fantasy that I would not mind living in, well except for the meddlesome AIs.
I would recommend this book to a mature audience of teens, adults, and science fiction fans. The number of graphic scenes is moderate and is somewhat appropriate for the polite members of society.
