We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is about two worlds that exist parallel to each other: the physical world known as Cosmos and the magical world known as Caromentis. Entities in Caromentis have obtained godlike powers, while only a select few in the Cosmos have. Within the physical world lies Voulhire, a nation renowned for its prosperity and refinement. Although touted as an ideal nation by outsiders, Voulhire is not without its shortcomings.

This nation has faced its fair share of problems, from being harassed by an enemy nation to a king engaged in political conflict with his second-in-command to a town that has suffered nameless atrocities from its past lords. The number of plots and subplots in this novel is sure to keep readers riveted to the pages. Reading this book was fun.

If there is one aspect of this book that I enjoyed, it is the way Matthew Tysz carries his readers along. Every word had me glued to the pages; it was like a journey I wished would never end. He is one of those writers who is able to convey the essence of a scene and bring it to life. This is a skill I look for in writers because it allows me to fully immerse myself in the story.

This is Book One of the We Are Voulhire series, and as the first installment, there was a lot of groundwork laid for the sequel. The entire time was spent fleshing out the characters and giving them substance. This is one of those books that boasts a wide variety of characters telling the story from their different points of view, which was one of the things I loved most about this book. By allowing even the villain to tell the story from his point of view, we get to see why he turned out the way he did and what drives him.

I would give We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I found nothing about it that I disliked enough to merit a reduction in stars. The editing was well done, as I did not find any errors in it, whether a typo or a grammatical error. The fact that I could not put the book down until I was done reading it sealed the deal for me. This book deserves all the stars it gets. I would recommend this to anyone who loves magical novels set in a fictional world.
