Suffering from life in a war-torn nation, Galen Bray jumps at the opportunity to move to a supposedly peaceful, magical land, hoping to build a better life for himself. Galen’s move is cushioned by his uncle, who left his fortune to Galen in his will. Among the inherited fortune is his uncle’s steel business which runs in his good name. Galen hopes to make a name for himself as a blacksmith in the city of Magnum Caelum in Voulhire.

Meanwhile, Voulhire is going through its own political drama and approaching disaster in the form of those with advanced magical knowledge who seek destruction, power, and gain. The impending rise of Lord Melodorath, a seemingly lost but not forgotten evil mage threatens to destroy Galen’s dreams of peace and prosperity. Galen’s journey in search of other special metals, which he seeks to succeed in his new career as a blacksmith, takes him to unexpected places as he meets exciting people who help him uncover the secrets of Voulhire. Read this twisted story of hope, drama, politics, and sins of the past in Matthew Tysz’s We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies.

One of the most enticing aspects of this book was how intricately the various, complicated facets of this book were knitted together. The story keeps shifting from one character’s perspective to another’s, all of whom seem as different as it gets from one another. All of this is done in a fluid, easy-to-understand manner that keeps the reader on edge with each chapter. The plot in itself is incredible and seems like could turn this book into one of the top reads of our time. The world of Voulhire was extremely well thought out, down to minor details such as the materials used to build the swords. It depicts magic, power, and kindness, a few of the key themes of the book. The characters in themselves are captivating and relatable. The author has also included a map of Voulhire and a glossary of characters and story-specific terms, which proved incredibly helpful.

This is one of the few books for which I can say I found absolutely no cons. The writing, storytelling, and character development were all compelling.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is a perfect blend of escapism, magic, kindness, politics, and drama. It is a wonderful read that one will not be likely to forget. However, I would not recommend this book to people looking for a light read that does not require a lot of focus, as this book does contain complicated subplots within plots. Besides that, it is a perfect read for readers wishing to disappear into a different, magical world. It also seemed to me exceptionally well edited as I found no grammatical errors. This is the first book in a series of nine, and I cannot wait to read the rest.
