Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a sci-fi novel by Matthew Tysz. King Arcolo is the king of Voulhire, a prosperous and thriving country. He appoints Eldus as the ruler of Hillport, a great city ruined by its previous leader. Lord Meldorath, a mage and the former ruler of Hillport, was a terrible leader. He used the position for his selfish interests, endangering the lives of many innocent people. He has been proclaimed dead.
Due to the fear the people have for him, they forbid anyone to speak his name. Galen Bray is from the Land of Princes and comes to Voulhire to inherit his uncle's forge. He is aided by Rowan, his uncle's enforcer, who helps him settle in quickly. He quickly learns blacksmithing with the manual his uncle left for him. Is Meldorath alive? How does this involve Galen? To find out, grab a copy.
The author writes the book from various perspectives, which can be confusing at times, but I understood it and really enjoyed it. This highlights the writing skill of the author. I like the world-building; it contributed to the plot and made the storytelling flow smoothly. I enjoyed the magic displayed in the book; it was realistic and not too far-fetched. The characters all had important roles to play and executed them superbly. Even the secondary characters weren't just fillers and had important roles to play. Eldus's character was my favorite; he was a very thoughtful and caring leader. He always put the needs of the people above his own. An example of this was when he immediately moved with his family after being appointed to rule Hillport. He also treated his servants nicely.
Rowan's character was very funny and added humor to the book. He was also very loyal and helped Galen a lot, even when he didn't need to. I found no flaws in the book. It was interesting to read, and I was engrossed completely while reading it. I also like the title of the novel. The cover page is also fitting, and I applaud the author for that.
I found no flaws in the book, indicating it was exceptionally well edited. I happily give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I found nothing wrong with it. As the first book in the series, it set a good tone for the subsequent books. I recommend it to lovers of drama, suspense, thrillers, and action.
