Review of Terms of Service
Craig W. Stanfill's science fiction book, "Terms of Service," imagines a possibly dystopian future for mankind. The book highlights the potential issues that could occur when artificial intelligence and machines become more integrated into all aspects of society. Because artificial intelligence can also be utilized to maintain a controlled grasp on the freedom and free will of the humans it is supposed to serve, the claim that technology and artificial intelligence will significantly improve human lives can be easily disproved.
The book's main character, Kim, lived in a sophisticated civilization where artificial intelligence had been incorporated to prevent people from destroying themselves out of self-centred desire, which had previously resulted in war and disaster. Despite progress, this new and controlled society had drawbacks. People were afraid, lonely, and very unhappy with always putting the needs of society before their own, and if they were to do so well, they would be labelled as selfist and punished. The people in this society had little to no freedom of expression, movement, or anything else, for that matter.
Kim, who was employed by the AI Company at the time, was scheduled to see her dependable buddy Shan, who is prone to mishaps. A bike journey they took will forever alter their lives. Kim, who discovered that her entire existence had been a lie and that every decision she had taken had not been her own, took the option to fight for her freedom. Her life was upended entirely as a result and she received severe punishment. This did not stop her from pursuing her objectives, though, as she was willing to do whatever it took to preserve her freedom and free choice. How successful will she be?
I love how the author made a point of discussing the flaws in both our current society and potential future societies, which made for a great read. The primary character's challenges and daily struggles made her life feel incredibly real. The book seemed so complete, and I enjoyed every aspect of it.
The illogical usage of pronouns was the only aspect of the book that bothered me. Yes, the book inspired a world in which it was the norm, but it made reading and comprehending the book difficult. The book also seemed to go on forever, and I thought portions of it were strange.
I give this book a score of 5 out of 5. The plot was enjoyable. There were no errors in the editing; it was done effectively. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about human rights and science.
