I remember the first time I signed a new contract at work. The paperwork involved a lot of clauses and fine print that I had to pay attention to. The terms and conditions in the piece of paper became my governing laws, and going astray would mean significant repercussions. Moreover, the terms were subject to change at any time and without my input.

It would be surprising to find out that there is a whole human society living under the restrictive yoke of terms and conditions. These said terms are meticulously followed up by a team of omnipresent AI systems that can reward your good conduct or punish you for a misdemeanour. Kim, an AI trainer, happens to live under these tough conditions. This restrictive society sees to it that even the basic emotions and tendencies of life like a mother’s love or even finding the perfect mate are controlled to the finest detail. This results in a fearful and secretive society. Sadly, Kim has undergone this entire trauma, but she trudges on to be the perfect citizen. However, all that can go wrong in her life falls into shambles when a ride with her best friend, Shan, turns out to be a rollercoaster of mistakes that changes Kim’s life forever.

Terms of Service is a fictional world set by Craig W. Stanfill. The coexistence between AI systems and human beings makes me question our reality when AIs finally become sentient. Will we be under the same yoke of restrictions that Kim and her counterparts are under, or will we be able to stand our ground and resist? Luckily for us, AI is still under human management, and we can safely exercise our humanity as we please. The author has creatively and beautifully described Kim’s life: from her constant need to be on the right side of the law, to her inherent rebellious nature stemming from her childhood. The emotions in the book are also adequately described, and the reader cannot help but be part of the events in the story.

The plot of the book is consistent; beginning slowly and picking up the pace as the story goes on. The only negative thing I found in the book was the lack of the male gender. I found this very disconcerting, as there is a clear distinction between the two sexes whenever there is a sexual encounter. However, the author relates this to the differences in translation from Panglobal to English. The translation of the book is impeccable, despite the setback above. The book appears to be exceptionally well-edited, as there were no errors present. There is a minor mention of profanity that fits the story's plot. I am happy to rate Terms of Service five out of five stars.

This book is suitable for a mature audience of fiction fans, computer geeks, and AI enthusiasts. It is very entertaining and educative, especially with matters concerning drug and substance abuse.
