Review of Terms of Service
[Following is a volunteer review of "Terms of Service" by Craig W. Stanfill.]
There is a widespread belief that artificial intelligence (AI) is the way of the future and that its advancement would be beneficial. This belief doesn't take much into account, doesn't describe all the aspects, and doesn't measure what it involves. Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a sci-fi novel with a projection into the future of an AI-controlled society and the fictional perspective of this predicament. Kim, the protagonist of this book, is an employee at the artificial intelligence surveillance state and works to fix AI malfunctions and update its operations to be more realistic through simulations and training.
Kim is a daring young lady looking for excitement and life-changing experiences. But, over time, she became dissatisfied with her job and sought something better. This feat becomes a reality when she encounters a group of people who do not live an AI-controlled life and whose lives are different from hers. Does this change her perspective? Does she give up on everything to start a new adventure?
Everyone sees only the advantages of artificial intelligence and how it would make things easier for humans. This book thoroughly defines every problem with having an AI society, like the poor effects on child upbringing and the disconnection of emotional decisions due to making only logical ones. I had fun imagining all of the possibilities of artificial intelligence, and they seemed like realistic concepts. Though the thought of chaos and war breaking out due to an artificial intelligence malfunction is scary, this book is slow-paced to carry readers along and help them understand every key concept. The characters had distinct personalities and developed as the story came together. I enjoyed reading about Kim's adventure, her practice of different things to update the AI system, and all the emotions expressed during her journey.
I do not dislike anything about this book because it made me feel a lot of emotions, and I believe these are the traits of a good book. I also liked seeing AI technology from a different perspective.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for its narrative power and the author's writing style. The book was exceptionally well-edited. It has a creative expression of the environment and characters. These reasons are enough to make the book deserving of this rating.
I recommend it to readers interested in sci-fi novels and readers who enjoy learning about artificial intelligence, its emotional deprivations, and its impact on the earth.
