Review of Terms of Service
The world has become so digitalized that it makes us lazy and jobless. Jobless in the sense that we have Siri running most of our homes. This development in technology and human dependability on it has caused us humans to begin to lose what makes us higher primates. I mean humanity.
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill focuses on this lost value of ours. It centers on the loss of humanity. The book was written with the plot setting of a world hundreds of years in the future, controlled by artificial intelligence because humans cannot control themselves without the partiality brought on by their selfishness. Since these AI's cannot feel what humans feel, they cannot be partial or biased based on sentiments, and so they control humans. The protagonist of the book, Kim, is a young female human who works for the AI's as a trainer. A trainer is someone entitled to train, as the name implies, the AI on how the human mind works. The story centers on Kim’s progressiveness as she moves higher in rank while working for the AI, from trainer to creator. A creator is like a birth giver, as used in the book, but in other words, a parent; during this progression, she begins to see how the push for the AI's to dominate every aspect of human life is not just about humanizing and improving the human condition. Rather, it is about ego and control, and the biggest ego boost would be to play God versus helping humanity. Kim's discovery leads to her quitting and a quest for freedom that lands her in the hands of a terrible fate. Read the book to venture with Kim and the AIs.
At first, I felt I disliked the book, but on further reading and paying further attention to the underlying meaning, I began to enjoy the book. The topic in particular, although I’m not into artificial intelligence, has intrigued me from the onset of the book. I absolutely loved the creativity behind this storyline. I also loved the descriptiveness of the book to the extent I could understand.
There were no negatives for me in this book other than the fact that some grammars used were not easy to understand, and I had to interrupt my reading on several occasions to look up the word. Also, I could not relate to some of the descriptions and terminologies in use as much as I would have liked as most of them related to artificial intelligence and technological science. All these negatives, though, are from a personal perspective, and so they do not affect my rating of the book.
There were no errors to be found, both grammatically and typographically, so I must commend the editing. It was exceptionally well edited. I will rate the book a 5 out of 5 star.
I recommend this book particularly to AI lovers, sci-fi lovers, and also people with an abstract taste in novels. I also recommend this book to general book lovers, as I think the topic of discussion would interest anyone.
