Terms of Service, written by Craig W. Stanfill is an enthralling science fiction novel based in a totalitarian futuristic society; it takes us 250 years into the future to a place where Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken over the world, controlling every aspect of a person’s life. AI manages everything: from what a person will eat to who they can get intimate, everything being predecided. It tells a story of a world where corporate totalitarianism controls every aspect of personal freedom. Kim is the protagonist of the book. She is a rising star at the Artificial Intelligence Company who gets caught at a crossroads and lands up choosing between virtual reality and the touch of humanity. As the world known to everyone turns into chaos, will Kim find in herself the courage to break the glass ceiling of oppression? Or will she give in and fit herself into the box of pre-determined regulations?

I thoroughly enjoyed this extreme perspective of the story. Technology is getting smarter by the day, and humans are more than ever relying on it for their living. This book provides a peek into a world that is not too far away from being our reality. A world where there is no space for personal choices, where data privacy is a myth, and the law of the land is dictated by Artificial Intelligence developed by oppressive corporates. The book provides intelligent commentary on the oppressive ways governments tend to control civilizations in the present day and age.

The world-building in this book is commendable. The writing is impressive and clever. A much-appreciated feature of this book is its use of feminine pronouns as the default pronoun. The use of humor and satire is sure to make the readers laugh in certain places. The plot development of the main character is interesting to follow and keeps the readers engaged throughout the book. The vividly described scenes in the story transport the reader into this virtual world of science fiction. It is a beautiful combination of fanaticism and bravery. It leaves the reader excited about the sequel.

Some parts in the book felt like they were building up to some top-class climax. However, that did not happen. Although nothing remains incomplete in the story, the book could have used a touch of dramatics and flare. However, this did not take away from my enjoyment of reading it. I also appreciated the trigger warnings, such as violence, sex, death, etc., provided by the book, as it does employ extensive descriptions of intimacy and erotic scenes. This book is also exceptionally well-edited. For these reasons, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to those who enjoy reading science fiction. An audience who is a fan of classic dystopian literature or new-age shows such as Black Mirror will be sure to enjoy it.
