Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service: Subject to Change without Notice by Craig W Stanfill is an exceptional science fiction novel about corporate totalitarianism, personal freedom, and Kim, the main protagonist’s journey to reclaim her humanity from an oppressive regime. An Artificial Intelligence company called Als basically controls every aspect of every human's life. The Als essentially control what she eats, whom she spends time with, whom she is allowed to have sex with, and what time she wakes up, basically, everything is controlled. The freedom we enjoy today is essentially stripped away from everyone in the book. This book makes us fear the rapid advancement of technology in the present time.
There are several positives in this book; the most positive aspect was the fact that the author managed to instil fear in the reader’s mind without using any form of horror. This was done very smoothly and the fear of technology taking over the world remained in my mind for several days after reading the book. Furthermore, this was written amazingly well by the author because this is very hard to do. The fact that I as a reader was able to imagine the world as described just shows how well it was written. Also, the relatability of the book to the real world just seemed so real, it felt like it was showing us a part of the future, felt truly incredible.
On the other hand, there were some negatives, such as the slow progression of the story. Roughly about the first 55% of the book was slow. Even though this is necessary to create the buildup and describe everything, it could have moved along a little faster. Furthermore, I felt that the ending was a bit rushed. In the last two pages of the book, literally, most of the plot came together. I felt that if the beginning was dragged out a lot, then the ending should have been stretched out a bit too.
I would give Terms of Service: Subject to Change without Notice 5 out of 5 stars. The main reason behind this score is because of the chill feeling I got after finishing the book, and even while reading it was exceptional by the author, it’s very rare I’ve felt this way. The fact that the story is set in the future, relates so much to what is happening now in the present time and makes us think how technology is essentially taking over the world and we don’t even realise it.
I would recommend this book to everyone, really, mainly those that enjoy science fiction. But I would also like to recommend this book to the younger generation because they are more reliant on technology than the older generation. The youngsters need to understand the importance of privacy and freedom, and if we let technology take over that will be snatched away from us without even realising it.
