Review of Terms of Service
Have you ever thought about the future of the world in light of the technological advances made in the fourth industrial revolution? Artificial intelligence, 5G, and virtual reality have all had breakthrough innovations. Mark Zuckerberg has already urged people to leave reality and move to the Metaverse, a Virtual Reality setting where we can live as computerized avatars. Have you considered the future of humanity in light of all of these developments?
In his book Terms of Service, Craig W. Stanfill uses his creative and imaginative skills to write a fictional story that looks at humanity's future given technological advancements, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. The book, the first installation in a dystopian science fiction series, follows the story of Kim, a young woman living in a society run by an artificial intelligence company. Stringent rules govern humans living in this society. They have no control over their lives because everything about them—what they eat, the kind of music they listen to, and who they have sex with—is dictated by the company. The goal was to have a utopian society void of wars, hunger, and diseases.
Because of the dictatorial nature of this society, Kim grew up with her life being closely scrutinized and monitored. While others struggled to cope with the strict rules, Kim's brilliance and diligence enabled her to succeed, earning her a high social cohesion rating. Because of her high social cohesion rating, the company promoted her to a model citizen. As a model citizen, she participated in the training of AI. Access to high-level information was one of the unique benefits of this new responsibility. However, when she uncovers hard truths about her past, she questions and doubts everything she thought she knew.
The book Terms of Service not only provided excitement through its plot but also prompted reflection on the potential societal impact of artificial intelligence. The author's understanding of artificial intelligence added depth to the development of the story. Despite a slow start, the narrative remained engaging. As the story progressed, my interest heightened, particularly in the last four chapters, because I was eager to see how Kim would adapt to her altered circumstances.
Overall, Terms of Service was a worthwhile read. Aside from the thrill, it conveys valuable lessons about the potential of AI to shape the future in unexpected ways, the partial consequences of relying heavily on technology, the ethical and moral implications of developing and using AI, and the complications that come with an overly controlled society. There is nothing I disliked in the book. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars because of the excellent editing and professional writing style.
I recommend this book to adults interested in reading fiction that deals with contemporary themes and technology-related issues.
