Best friends Flynn and Boone are engaged in a friendly joust. Their horses charge from opposite ends of the field, each man's lance pointed at the shield of the other. Suddenly, someone in the crowd blows a horn, frightening the horses. The lances miss the intended targets, and Flynn gets impaled. Lying on a hospital bed in terrible shape, Flynn gets Boone to make a promise to him, one that would lead Boone to New York City. Intent on keeping his promise, Boone sets out on a journey to a city he is unfamiliar with. He is, however, unaware of the major role he would have to play to uncover a sinister scheme that will set off the destruction of the world.

The Devil Pulls the Strings is a science-fiction/fantasy novel with a blend of action, horror, mystery, comedy, suspense, and a bit of romance. The author, J. W Zarek, bases the story on historical music featuring the Italian violinist, Paganini. The narrative adopts different settings as indications of medieval, modern, and future times are observed. The plot is written in a first-person narrative and follows the quest of Boone Daniels, the main protagonist.

One major highlight which readers will find intriguing is the different elements that have been flawlessly combined to make up the story. The blending of the concepts of time travel, magic, and different cultures is simply genius. The story, bizarre as it may seem initially, is delightful to read and contains multiple humorous dialogues and events. The narrative is indeed a reflection of the author's cunning and eccentric personality. Present in this novel are multiple action scenes, and various unpredictable twists readers will not see coming. These two elements will boost the curiosity of readers and leave them engaged from start to finish.

The author also integrates a collection of exquisitely developed and dynamic characters with unique personalities into the narrative. Readers will find themselves drawn to Boone Daniels due to his wittiness, charm, and his ability to adapt to every situation. His unrelenting determination to see things through to the end regardless of the level of danger involved is an attribute of his character I find admirable. The plot is also driven by many underlying and poignant themes, some of which include good versus evil, love, and hope.

I got a kick out of this novel and can give it nothing less than 5 out of 5 stars. A full rating is awarded not just due to the impeccable editing, on which I commend the author, but also how the narrative took me by surprise in terms of its entertainment value.

The Devil Pulls the Strings is suitable for teenagers and adolescents, as it contains no eroticism and a little profanity that borders on the emotions of its characters. This book is also highly recommended to lovers of sci-fi/fantasy novels.
