Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a science fiction novel that transports readers many years into the future. In a new modern society where AI controls every aspect of the citizen’s life, there was a person named Kim. She was prosperous in her chosen career. Despite being successful, Kim was always unhappy and depressed because she had little freedom in the society in which she found herself. She knew something was missing in her life but couldn’t place her finger on it. Kim was an astute and upright citizen who rarely disobeyed orders, even though they were complex. Even though Kim enjoyed her job and was very hardworking, outside of work, her life was a wreck, and she constantly took to alcohol to suppress her rising anxiety. Despite her restlessness, Kim always tried her best to stay calm and remain obedient, but unfortunately for her, she has a friend who always brings out her curious side. In the society where Kim finds herself, curiosity is never a virtue and can always put one in deep trouble. Also, the directors had made many attempts to separate Kim from her friend, all to no avail. Until the unthinkable happened, and Kim began to question her identity.
Terms of Service is an exceptionally well-written novel that depicts adventure, friendship, and even betrayal. Each character had a demon they were wrestling with because they all grew up in a society where they were not allowed to grow up in a family. All their lives were controlled by AIs, and every activity was monitored, making it difficult for them to exhibit normal emotions. Expressing happiness, anger, or even showing love to others was not allowed, and children were often taken away from their mothers at a very young age to be raised by mentors. Kim had a heavy burden that always overwhelmed her, but she had no mother to share it with, and every conversation with her friends was constantly monitored. The society in which Kim was living was dysfunctional, but the leaders felt that by controlling everyone’s lives and activities, there would be peace. Kim lived in a society where people were not allowed to think for themselves. The foods you eat, the clothes you put on, and even the person you date must be determined by the AIs. This book is insightful and educational, and my favorite part of the book was when Kim finally decided to start thinking for herself and forsook all the enticing amenities to gain her freedom once and for all. The book undoubtedly gave readers insight into what our society might become if we refuse to allow nature to take its course.
My only criticism of the book is the use of the feminine pronoun, which dominated the entire book. Even though the author tried his best to make readers understand his intentions, I still found it hard to understand some aspects of the book, and differentiating between the characters was somewhat confusing. You could barely tell if you were reading about a male or a female.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is enlightening, educational, and exceptionally well edited. I learned about artificial intelligence from a different perspective, which gave me a new experience. The author did an excellent job of weaving together a marvelous story, and his sense of imagination is out of this world.
I recommend this book to lovers of adventure and anyone who would love to read about the possible future of artificial intelligence. Also, for those who would love to live in a controlled society free of crime, diseases, and inequality, this book is a must-read for them.
