Kim is an AI trainer who works for the Artificial Intelligence Company. She was taken from her birth mother when she was four, just like most humans are. She lives in a city where humans and artificial intelligence (AI) coexist. AI controls every aspect of human life. There are rules on the type of clothes to wear, what to eat, and what type of house to live in. Kim is ambitious and feels like the only way to break the monotony of her life is to get a promotion at the company she works for. She believes that by interacting with higher levels of AI, she may gain a level of satisfaction.
This is until she meets an old friend, Shan, who was sent away for making trouble when they were younger. With Shan back in Kim's life, she begins to break a few rules, which makes life exciting for a while. One day, she decides to accompany Shan on a motorcycle ride past a point where humans are not allowed to cross. She discovers something that completely changes her life and what she thinks of the world she lives in. Find out what she discovered when you read the Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice by Craig W. Stanfill.
There were many positives about this book. It was science fiction that depicted a futuristic world controlled by technology and robots. The author was able to tell this story masterfully. The setting was adequately set. The language employed further gave the book that futuristic vibe. Companies were named solely by what they produced. It was just the shoe company or the clothing company. There was an alternate naming technique used. People’s last names were numbers. This made the book very unique.
The plot was well-rounded. Although it had a slow start when the author was introducing the characters, the book became fast-paced in later chapters and kept the reader engrossed. The characters were well developed. I could relate to Kim's struggles in trying to make sense of the world she lived in. This book talks about how important free will is to us humans and how we cannot really live without it.
There was nothing to dislike about the book. It was exceptionally well edited. I, therefore, rate it 5 out of 5 stars. There was no reason to deduct any stars from the book. I recommend it to lovers of science fiction. It is the second book in a series but can be read alone.
