Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book of the great saga by Matthew Tysz. This book tells us an interesting story of Galen Brey, the refugee from the Lands of the Princes who left his old life and started a new life in Voulhire, the country ruled by king Wilhelm. Young Galen has everything to build a new life in Voulhire, as he gets an inheritance from his uncle, who died just a day before his arrival. He studies blacksmiths as his uncle and his new friend, Rowan, help all the way through. You can visit all the great places with Galen as long as with the way more intriguing characters like Meldorath – the greatest magician who overthrew the Hillport’s lord, Orlin, and is missing; Eldus Alderman – the new lord of Hillport after Meldorath and Orlin, with his great political and economical goals to rebuild and flourish the rural area of Hillport, turning it to the strong port town.; Midius Maido – Chancellor of the Mianoran Council, having great power in Voulhire. The book is like the perfect mix of real history, showing us how different personalities, and different interests, have been creating our world all along and transforming it into a fantasy story.
The great thing about this book is that the author describes the environment, places, and people and their personalities equally well. He shows us the development of the characters as long as the magnificent views of the Voulhire and other places. The characters are really well thought through, not the typical characteristics but the unique ones who keep you interested all the time.
On the other hand, in the beginning, all the descriptions, of quiet, no-action situations could be kind of boring, as this first book solely serves the purpose of getting to know all the main characters, the situations, and the conditions held in different places. Besides, as the author tells us different stories, first about the immigrant Galen and then suddenly changes to the palace situations, meetings, political conversations and etc., it can get a little bit confusing sometimes, as you need to switch kind of roughly from the mine to king’s palace.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars, as already mentioned above, it’s just the beginning and the author spent really much quality time creating the quality characters and plot, generally.
It would be great if you are a fantasy fiction lover but if not you still can have a marvelous journey in Voulhire, no matter how old you are.
