Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Galen, a refugee from the Land of Princes, is beginning to learn that trouble is brewing across the prosperous kingdom of Voulhire. The town of Hillport has just recently survived terrible acts committed by its lord. He is supposedly dead, but a fleet of ships surrounds a nearby island. Further down, deep in the desert, a long-feared enemy is beginning to grow in numbers. How will the kingdom of Voulhire survive these oncoming troubles, and will Galen be able to navigate this strange new land? In We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz, we are introduced to this epic world and begin to unravel its mysteries.
I think this book was an impressive first entry to a series. There were a lot of characters and background information to get in this book, but it never felt rushed or overwhelming. I loved how natural it felt to get information throughout the book. A lot of things we can deduce from how the characters behave. There are times when we're told how things are in this world, but it's not overdone, and how it's explained also makes sense. It doesn't feel like we're sitting in a classroom getting a history lecture.
I also really enjoyed the depth that the characters have. Even characters we won't see in later books have a very detailed and unique presence. It was exciting to read through each new point of view because everyone felt like a real person.
Another thing I enjoyed is how well this book is completed. It didn't feel rushed and seemed like a natural conclusion to the story. There wasn't any cut-off in the middle of the action in order to get you to buy the next book. It concludes the events we experience in this book and sets the scene for future conflicts.
There wasn't anything that I disliked about this book. I think the pacing was great and the characters and world were very well developed. As a bonus, this book was exceptionally well edited because I didn't notice any errors while reading.
I rate this book five out of five. I loved how realistic all the characters seemed. I was also really impressed by how well Tysz was able to introduce them to a rich world and keep the mystery for future books.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys epic, large-world fantasy stories. It can also be appreciated by those who enjoy stories in a medieval setting. There is little explicit imagery, so it can be enjoyed by all ages. However, the length of this book and series may be better for more serious readers.
