[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Rebirth" by Andrew Pereira.]
Rebirth by Andrew Pereira is a fantasy novel that follows the story of Kael Cley, a teenager who has been deeply affected by the loss of his mother and the strange sleep of his twin sister. Despite this, he is determined to attend the Iris Academy, a prestigious facility known for training legendary warriors. It is the only academy in the empire considering "Arcanists" for acceptance.
At the academy, Kael discovers a new class specifically tailored for him. This class is for "Arcanists Specialists" who can manipulate a singular element to a fantastic degree. As he navigates through daily lessons, relationships with his classmates, and missions that take him across the empire, he struggles with understanding his true arcane potential and deciphering the true intentions of those around him.
The first thing that caught my attention when I started reading was that this was the author's maiden novel. I had read a few maiden novels, but something about this book was unique. I expected to see some of the issues that most maiden novels had, like plot holes and rushed-up writing. That was not to be, as nothing about the book's storyline indicated it was the author's debut novel. He thought out every aspect before penning down the first word.
The plot was intriguing and captivating, with a well-crafted fantasy world and complex characters. I liked that the plot is fast-paced and action-packed, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. The novel had a good balance of character development, world-building, and action.
The author did everything to make this book as easy to navigate as possible. One way was to add a map at the beginning. That way, we could see all the locations and where they were situated. It helped me follow the characters' journeys without confusion — a big thanks to the author for this.
I liked what the author did with the main character, Kael. He allowed his humanity to show, even though he possessed special abilities. An example was when Instructor Claythorne was telling him about a particular task, and he was scared. It took Mylo, his fellow Arcanist Specialist, to get him to consider the task. His vulnerability at that moment endeared him to me.
I found nothing to dislike about Rebirth, and the editing was professionally done. Therefore, I'd rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Overall, it was an enjoyable read, and I'd recommend it to fantasy lovers.
