Review of Sebastian and the Invisible Island
Sebastian and the Invisible Island by Michael William Hogan is an adorable adventure book that will appeal to nearly everyone. This book has the perfect balance of science fiction, humor, and adventure. The story takes the reader through an exciting escapade that results from the misjudgment of a preteen. The main character, Sebastian, becomes lost at sea and has to find a way to survive through many hurdles. Sebastian manages to reach the safety of land where he is recruited by a small alien population to assist in their mutual survival and return home.
There are many positive aspects of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed every ounce of this short tale. The character descriptions as well as landscape illustrations were adequately descriptive with the ideal amount of information. The reader can easily visualize each character and each landscape. It was as though I was alongside Sebastian as he made his discoveries of the island, the resources available, and the foreign visitors. Within the first couple of pages, I knew I wanted to share this book with my children because I know they are going to love it as much as I do. The author using colorful language without vulgarity is quirky, unique, and wholesome. The character development, specifically of Sebastian, is enjoyable and keeps you entertained throughout the book. Sebastian’s growth through obstacles, interactions with other characters, and resourcefulness is fascinating to read. I want to be more like Sebastian. Sebastian made me proud to know him.
To list any negative aspects of Sebastian and the Invisible Island will be extremely hard. If I have to list any sort of negative aspect, it would be the length of the book. I could only wish for a longer book because it was so great.
I would rate Sebastian and the Invisible Island 5 out of 5 stars. I think it would be nearly impossible to improve this book. Grammar was excellent throughout the entire story. No sexual content at all and only a handful of very borderline vulgar words.
I would recommend this book to most everyone. I think the adolescent age range, especially males, would particularly enjoy this story. I think male adolescents would be able to relate to Sebastian and potentially be envious of his adventure. This is a great book for a family to enjoy together. Readers that enjoy science fiction and adventure would be a great targeted audience.
