Review of Terms of Service
Term of service: Subject to Change Without Notice by Craig W. Stanfill is a science fiction novel based in a new world order where humans are ruled by AIs– Artificial Intelligence; they watch and listen to everything humans do, invading their privacy in the worst way anyone can imagine. The AIs even controlled the language the humans spoke, the type of food they must eat, the clothes they wear, the type of transit services they use, the type of people they meet, and the places they should go. From the perspective of the AIs, all this control was necessary to make the world a better place without any conflict, a world free from corruption, religion, inequality, and crime.
This book follows the perspective of a young rebellious and mischievous woman called Kim; she started working for The Artificial Intelligence Company soon after completing her major in AI studies, she has been working for the company for over 5 years now; training and programming AIs how to respond properly to their surroundings. Kim was excellent at her job but it was always her mischievous behavior that got her in trouble with the Hierarchy – which is an organization that decided what the penalties are for breaking the rules. However, Kim soon got promoted to a higher ranking where she got to create her own AI; it was something she’s been wanting to do ever since she started working for the company, but little did she know what she was getting herself into when she signed the term of service.
It was interesting to read a book where AIs are in control; which doesn’t seem bad because the AIs only want peace in the world by eliminating things like crime and inequality which are some of the aspects that cause conflict in the world. However, it’s quite ironic when the AIs invade human’s privacy and manipulate them. The AIs seem corrupt, hypocritical, and responsible for most of the conflicts that happen in the book.
There’s nothing I dislike about this book, I'd say the language of Panglobal is a bit confusing at first since every human is referred to as she, and humans should refer to themselves as a collective, but as I read on everything fell into place, and understood the book. I also believe this book was professionally edited because I found typos or spelling errors.
This book is unbelievably captivating and easy to follow even though it seems like a complex science fiction book which is why I rate it a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. There’s nothing bad I could say about it instead everything about it was surreal also giving a real experience how it would be to ruled by Artificial intelligence.
I recommend this book to science fiction lovers, especially Artificial Intelligence fans. The book is based in a new world order where Artificial Intelligence is in control and I believe it makes this book interesting to read.
