The book We are Voulhire: A new arrival under Great skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy novel that comprises political rivalries, war, greed, loyalty, friendship, family issues, magic, mages, some of which are potentially dangerous, such as biomages, and much more exciting components. This book is the first installment in the "We are Voulhire" series.

The protagonist is Galen Bray, who lives in the Land of Princes, a place that is full of war and misery. He gets an opportunity to escape when he inherits a business from his great uncle in Magnum Caelum, Voulhire.

Outwardly, Voulhire appeared as a land full of prosperity and riches. However, the kingdom is full of corruption and evil forces lurking in the shadows, waiting for the perfect opportunity to rob the citizens of their tranquility. The land is ruled by King Wilhelm, who wants the best for the kingdom, and, as such, appoints Lord Eldus Alderman to work on the restoration of the state of Hillport.

With political figures conspiring and a threat in the form of Riva Rohavi, a rebellious group of sadists, what is in store for our hopeful protagonist?

The author did a phenomenal job at building this world of Voulhire in much detail, and even provided a map at the beginning as well as a history of the kingdom in order to help the reader understand Voulhire. I am fairly interested in politics and history, so I enjoyed these aspects of the book. The book is written in first person when introducing the protagonist of the book and in third person for the rest of the characters. One more thing to note is that the book is not centered around Galen Bray, with him being new to Voulhire; instead, with each new chapter, we meet new characters and understand their opinions and perspectives on the events that are unfolding in the kingdom.

The characters are not two-dimensional, but they had some unique qualities that made them more interesting and relatable. The author gave a brief description of the characters at the beginning and a reference guide at the end of the book, so that the readers might not get confused, and that is much appreciated.

The story is engaging and intriguing, with all the unexpected twists and all the dark secrets. Although it's not all dark, there is some humor sprinkled here and there, such as the dancing soldiers, which is a good change of pace. A different character was under the spotlight in each chapter, and I could see the world through their eyes. I could easily imagine myself in that world because the author gave detailed descriptions of various events.

The book is well edited, albeit with some uncounted errors. It contains detailed descriptions of acts of violence, such as the killing of people with sheer cruelty and some mild sexual instances. There are some profanities as well. Topics such as pedophilia and rape are discussed, which might be upsetting to some readers; hence, reader discretion is advised.

I would give this book a solid 5 out of 5. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I'm going to read the next part after this.

I would recommend this book to people who are interested in fantasy novels and don't mind reading about sensitive topics. Teenagers older than fifteen can read and enjoy this book, as younger readers might get bored with all the politics and history.
