Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Mathew Tsyz
Chaos arrives at Castle Hillport in the form of an attack from a powerful magician. This precise and deadly attack claims a lot of casualties. The deadliest weapon in the kingdom, black magic, is used in this attack to cause the most harm to the people at the castle. As the reader moves from this intense and dark opening scene, they meet other book characters. The first character we, as the reader, encounters is Galen Bray. He is a young man traveling from the Land of the Princes to Magnum Caelum as per the request of his uncle.
Tragedy strikes again as Galen’s uncle suddenly dies. Galen, the only heir to the business left behind by his deceased uncle, decided to proceed with the journey anyway. When he gets to Magnum, he meets his uncle’s executioner Rowan, another central character in the story, and they become close. Rowan fills him in on the details of his uncle’s forge business and life and ultimately becomes a big part of Galen’s life. He assists him with his new responsibilities in taking over the forge.
While all this is happening, Eldus Alderman, the new ruler of Hillport, a city near Magnum Caelum. He is a passionate leader intent on correcting his predecessors’ mistakes and reinstating the city to what it once was. This does not come without pushback, and several influential people want to maintain the status quo. As a result, Eldus Alderman’s family is in danger, and it is only time that can tell whether he will be able to protect his city and family.
The story is tumultuous but well-written. The author uses simple-to-understand language that is easy to follow. Even though the book has several complicated scenes, I liked how the author sets the stage for these scenes, describing them in vivid detail, with helps the reader picture what exactly is happening. I also liked the pacing of the book. The story flowed from beginning to end, and I enjoyed reading about the various themes in this book, such as love and friendship, death, betrayal, and the black magic aspect. The tension in the book is also well executed and there is this sense that no one can trust anyone, which makes the climaxes all the more satisfying. There is nothing about this book I disliked, and it is a book that I will read again.
Because I genuinely enjoyed this book and did not find any grammatical mistakes that could indicate that it was not professionally written, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to fantasy lovers who are excited to explore a new world with diverse characters and an original storyline.
