Boundary Crossed - Melissa F. Olson

Post by secretadmire »

One of Amazon Kindle's free books for April. I'm a sucker for anything with vampires, so it was the obvious choice for me.
Boundary Crossed follows "Lex" Luther, a woman without passion or purpose not that her stint in the military is over and her twin sister is dead. Lex works nights at a grocery store, where she encounters an odd couple with a baby. But the baby is Lex's niece. Lex pulls out her military skills and kicks their asses to save the baby, but only barely manages this because they are vampires.
Wanting only to protect her niece, Lex makes a deal to serve Maven, the leader of the Colorado vampires, in exchange for protecting her niece. However, things get complicated when they realize that Lex is a witch with latent powers.
Now, Lex has to balance training with witches, hunting down the bad vampires, and keeping all of it a secret from her extended family, who has no idea Lex is a witch, thanks to her adoption.
The book has compelling action sequences throughout. Olson writes clearly and effectively amps up tension, especially in the riveting climax.
Lex is a literally strong female protagonist, thanks to her military skills. She also has plenty of worries, guilt, and priorities that make her an interesting character.
One thing I didn't like was the way the nickname "Lex" was forced. The author goes into a lot of time explaining how it was a military nickname after her middle name, and it takes away from the plot.
As a Coloradan, I was partial to the setting, having been to many of the exact locations in the book myself. This probably influenced my enjoyment of the book, as I could clearly picture locations without the author's descriptions. What do you non-Coloradan's think of the setting?
The writing was generally good, a fun light novel that doesn't try to reinvent the wheel but is like good for the beach. I wouldn't say no to the next book, but I also wouldn't make it a priority. Basically, if it's free on Kindle, I'll take it, but I wouldn't pay more than $1.99 for it.
What did you Kindle people think of it?
