We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under the great skies is the first book in the We are Voulhire series by Matthew Tysz. It is a fantasy tale filled with magic, mystery, tragedy, and realm politics. The story is told through a handful of characters' perspectives from around the kingdom of Voulhire. A few of which are; Wilhelm: King of Voulhire who tries to navigate through court manipulation unsure on who he can trust. While facing threats such as the Riva Rohavi (a faction of rebels) and Meldorath (an old friend turned powerful enemy). Galen Bray: a newcomer to Voulhire, tring to find his feet and start anew after fleeing his war-torn home (Lands of the Princes). An opportunity given to him by his estranged and late uncle. Eldus Alderman: A former judge, sent to the town of Hillport with his family by the king, to govern as the new lord and help the town heal after the tragedies involving his predecessors.

The story's progression is slow, but I believe that works in the reader's favour. It allows time to familiarise ourselves with the complex cast, their histories, and the world the author has created. Initially, when I read through the list of characters, I was concerned that I would not remember them all. However, I soon realised there was no need to be. The author’s character development was impressive. Each was unique and thus became memorable.

The story reads almost like a TV series, each chapter skipping from one character to the next and I feel this a clever way in which to write this, it made me want to continue on reading as I became invested in these characters' individual stories and needed to know what happened next.

I enjoyed the writing style. It was descriptive enough to easily picture what is being written but still leaving enough gaps for me to fill in the blanks with my own imagination.

The only negative point, in my opinion, with how this book was written is that because it hops from one character to another with each chapter, the action portions seem to come and go too quickly. I also feel that the ending was quite sudden. However, being this is only the first instalment, perhaps not such a negative as now I want to read the next book.

I enjoyed this read immensely, and I have found it very difficult to think of any negative points to comment on. As the first part of this series it has set the tone beautifully for the next books. The story had an easy flow to it even with each character's tale entwining together through the growing plot. The book was also well edited, I only found one mistake. With all this said, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book to adult lovers of fantasy stories as it has instances of profanity and references subjects of an adult nature.
