“Deliverance” by Brittany Comeaux is a Fantasy novel based in an alternate universe. If you are a fan of “Lord of the Rings” by J.R.R Tolkien or “The Black Magician Trilogy” by Trudi Canavan, then this is a book for you.
King Bogdan, the ruler of the Kingdom of Daldussa, is power-thirsty and malevolent. King Bogdan decides to invade the neighbouring peaceful Kingdom of Cierith, where he brutally murders the King and Queen. Their only child, and last surviving member of the Cierith’s Royal Family, Amelia is saved and taken to safety by the Kings loyal General, Gavril.
10 years later, after training as a Mage, she has renamed herself “Crystal” in order to keep her true identity secret and is now the leader of a rebel group called “Deliverance”. She hears of King Bogdan’s plan to steal a precious crystal, one which will make him an immortal, all-powerful, evil being. In the process of protecting the stone, the stone is split into shards and scattered across all neighbouring Kingdoms. During this battle, King Bogdan’s son Blaze is left behind and captured. He is eventually persuaded to help the rebels in their quest to collect all the shards before his father does, as whoever finds all the shards first can gain the ultimate power.
Crystal, the main character, is an easily likeable heroine. She is powerful in her mage skills and also adept with her sword. She doesn’t appear to be flooded with the idea of vengeance for her mother and father, rather that she puts a stop to any more suffering and to regain her peaceful kingdom.
I believe the relatability and character descriptions are one of the strong points in the book. The author clearly describes each characters personality, making them likeable or detestable. Sometimes in fantasy genres, it can be hard to make the reader able to relate in some way to the main characters due to, in my opinion, having to describe the fantasy world and places in which these characters reside.
While most of the author’s descriptions are on point a few definitely bothered me and took my attention away from the story itself. Once when describing a “very old mage”, the author advises the readers that he is a “quarter of a century old”, meaning that he is 25 years old? This is obviously just a careless error, however, with such a carefully thought out world and characters, it definitely stands out.
The quality of the writing itself is brilliant and captivating and the plot is also gripping. The plot twists are also well planned, even though they are slightly predictable. I almost wish that the quests to retrieve the shards were longer and focussed on more, rather than the love story line, as these definitely held a lot of untouched potential and would have definitely enhanced the story.
Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as it is definitely one to read if you enjoy the fantasy genre and would like a quick read. The slight errors, while irksome, do not detract much from the storyline. I personally would have liked the book to be longer, but this is always the sign of a good book!
