We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a medieval fantasy novel by Matthew Tysz that follows several characters, groups, and kingdoms. Galen, a man trying to discover the wonders of a new land after escaping the horrors of his old one. Wilheim, a
kind and benevolent king with secrets of his own. Meldorath, an arcane legend whose stories have managed to carve fear into the hearts of all who heard them. Eldus, a judge turned lord trying to bring hope to a desolate town. Four key players, several supporting stories each with different conflicting goals, each wanting to succeed and thrive. With the looming threat of a rebellious war, meldorath's prophesied return, and a mysterious unexplored world, the prosperous kingdom of voulhire faces crises at every corner. The situation is made direr when everyone including those charged with protecting the kingdom has their agenda. A war brewing on the horizon where only the strongest may survive will shake the kingdom to its very core.

The premise of the novel is an excellent one. Its lore and in-world stories were interesting reads. I particularly loved the description of the kingdom's politics and effective methods used in developing a desolate town. The plot build-up was perfectly executed and it was quite satisfactory how all the aforementioned pieces came into play at the end. Familial ties as a subtle recurring motif are something that appeals to me as it would many others. The mystery and suspense surrounding certain characters were a nice quality worth noting.

The constant shifts in perspectives might not appeal to some readers. It is a bit jarring to go from a point of view regarding powerful magic and politics to one involving the simple travels of a foreigner. I also didn't appreciate how there was seemingly no counter to magical abilities. While referenced in the book, counter-magic methods do not play a significant role in the story hence why it was quite irksome to see a mage whose abilities are known to escape imprisonment with said abilities and almost no resistance whatsoever.

Regardless, the story was perfectly told and held my interest till the end. The effort put into the book was evident. I noticed no errors within the book indicating it was professionally edited, the plot flowed nicely and the end was quite satisfactory hence I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend the book to readers who enjoy medieval fantasy and politics. It does not discriminate against any religion or race. It does however contain scenes with violent and graphic descriptions.
