Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a fantasy-themed fictional book written by Matthew Tysz that deftly discusses a lot about ineffective leaders who are rife with avarice for power and selfishness while also illustrating how man has evolved into cruelty and a lack of morality in his pursuit of power and dominance. It sheds light on a distinct caste of people who are depicted as the rulers of a realm with power readily available to them and those at the other end of the spectrum who are affected by any slight change in their whims and interests, with no other choice but to capitulate, acquiesce, and adapt to whatever circumstance or landscape results after every slight change in the graph of power.
Galen Bray, a modest and jovial immigrant from the gloomy realm of princes torn apart by conflict, is one of the main characters. a monarch who is prone to ineptitude but is troubled by his desire to leave a lasting impact on Voulhire's history. A competent judge turned lord with lofty dreams of transforming his run-down fishing village into the crown of southern trade and commerce with higher living standards and a well-deserved sophistication for his citizens, and a mage who, regardless of the means and consequences, yearns for the secrets of the elusive but unreachable magical realm of Caromentis. Here, in this novel, the author skillfully creates a literary cocktail that readers will appreciate, complete with just the right amount of intrigue, treachery, power struggles, fake and real friendships, relationships are driven by rewards, magic, science, family, and a fun voyage of self-discovery.
I like how well the author described the characters and settings in the book. It was an absolute stroke of genius on his part to include maps and a little character description at the beginning as a well-intended or needed crutch for excellent visualization. The author skillfully switches between first-person and third-person viewpoints in this novel, introduces an appropriate number of both ancient and modern English in a nearly seamless manner, and maintains a well-organized gallery of folkloric use that works flawlessly in the plot.
The only thing I didn't enjoy about the book was the author's failure to hold my interest with his ill-fitting narrative and nearly unbreakable habit of introducing random characters he doesn't intend to develop.
Despite its problems, the book was still interesting to read, and I enjoyed the task of trying to figure out its storyline. For these reasons, I gave the book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free. I recommend the book to ardent fans of philosophy, magic, and fantasy.
