Harry Watt, Bounty Hunter by Rob Guy is a book in the science fiction genre. It is the first installment in the Harry Watt series.

The year is 2150 A.D. Planets like Mars and Venus have the ability to hold sustainable life, but when the universe’s best hydrologist flees with top-secret information, sustainable life on Venus is threatened. Enter Harry Watt, a bailsman, but he prefers to be called a bounty hunter. Harry is tasked with finding the hydrologist by the end of the month. Happy to have a straightforward case, Harry takes it on, but he soon discovers something is very wrong with the facts he has been given. Harry, his dead partner and new friends they make along the way must figure out what is really going on before the safety of the universe is jeopardized.

As I stated above, this book is the first in a series, but I have no plans to read the second. The idea of this book is great, but the execution is lackluster. The plot really struggles to find its way. A lot of the scenes are unnecessary, and a lot of them take away from the plot. This book is described as a hunt for a fleeing criminal, but the scenes do not reflect that. Let me put it like this, if this book was titled “Harry Watt and His Romantic Conquests”, then the plot would make a lot more sense.

The characters are okay. I really hate to use the word “okay”, but I really can’t think of a better word to describe the characters. There is no real character development, and it’s because the characters are not fleshed out. Harry shows a little bit of growth, but it doesn’t seem genuine because it is so sudden. Usually with character development, there is a slow build toward change, and the change in Harry is too much in such a short amount of time. Heidi seems like she could be a great character, but she has to become more than just a romantic figure if she is to become great. Honestly, if the characters were fleshed out, I could really see myself liking them.

The writing style of this book is not flowery or wordy; in fact, it almost seems short. The depictions of characters and settings are very brief, and it’s hard to picture characters and settings as a result. There is a lot of dialogue. It is funny at times, but a lot of the time it slows down the pacing of the plot. I felt like the dialogue took over this book, and a lot of it should be cut out, so the dialogue doesn’t outweigh everything else.

There are not a lot of spelling errors in the book, but there are some minor mistakes. For example, one character says, “Use you head.” There are problems with comma usage or lack thereof, and these problems need to be cleaned up, as they are a bit distracting.

Overall, I give Harry Watt, Bounty Hunter 2 out of 4 stars. The premise of the book is good, but the delivery is weak. I do recommend this book to fans of the science fiction genre. Hopefully, the kinks with this installment can be worked out before the release of the next.

Great review! I like your description of the characters as being okay. That's such an apt description for some books I've read, where the characters are just....meh.

Thank you! It's so hard to describe certain characters sometimes, and I really struggled to find the right word. I felt a little silly using "okay", but I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's appropriate!

Thank you for the lovely review. I thought about reading this book when it was offered, but wasn't sure it was to my taste. A pity about the delivery.

Great review. I hate it when a book has a lot of potential and ends up being just mediocre. The lack of descriptions are surprising. The author is world building. If nothing else it should be overly descriptive.

Thank you jesska for the review. I don't mind a critical thinking review, but can't stand a critic. You're review was honest and that is the only way to help an aspiring author. Good job.

It's a bit frustrating when the book is lackluster. I completely agree with you!

Great review! I agree with the previous comments about the need for world building, if you're 135 years in the future.

Thank you. I can't even imagine trying to build a world in the future. It would have to be so detailed, and I'm not sure I would be good at it building something of that scale.

Love the review. I agree, needless scenes really drag down the quality of a book.

Really nice review :) It's so often that a book doesn't stimulate the reader at all. :P
