Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, a novel written by Matthew Tysz, is the first book in the We are Voulhire series. It is the story of a king, an empire, rebels, and a common man. The king, Wilhelm, inherited an empire founded on war and bloodshed. He also created a cause for war through his action to avert a plot he thought his sons have against him. The mage, Meldorath, is greatly feared by the people who have seen and have been affected by his power. Though the king's soldiers have arrested him, certain things about him are shrouded in mystery. Is he dead? Is he alive? What will he do about his arrest? The rebels are the Riva Rohavi. They are the descendants of those Saint Indus murdered to found the empire. Have they been conquered? Are they waiting for the right time to strike the empire? Galen is the common man. His deceased uncle made it possible for him to leave the Lands of the Princes. In Voulhire, he thought he has found a peaceful land. Is he wrong?
There are many things to love about this book. Firstly, I love how Tysz made the reader privy to certain things the characters are not aware of. For example, Galen thought Voulhire is the land of his dream. The riches and peace of the empire impressed him. Behind the riches and peace are the abuse of power, greed, and rebels about to start a war in the empire. Secondly, I love the mysteries in this book. The author cleverly situates them in the right positions. I wanted to see how these mysteries were solved. While reading this book, questions kept building up in my mind. Has Galen found a happy home for himself in Voulhire? What is the history of the Riva Rohavi? And what exactly do they want? Is Lord Meldorath dead or alive? Why did the king send Lord Eldus to Hillport? What role will Galen play in the conflict about to erupt in Voulhire? What will be the fate of the fishing town of Hillport? While reading this book, I found myself thinking about the next book in the We are Voulhire series. The author made this possible by postponing the solutions to these mysteries. Thirdly, the world Tysz made available to the readers is fascinating. In this world, people rode horses and fought with swords. Also, they had steam cars and enjoyed showers with hot water. I love the freedom the amalgamation of the things in the old world and the modern world afforded the author. Finally, the author used the first-person point of view and the third-person point of view. These narrative strategies brought depth to the actions and the characters in this book.
This book does not have a negative aspect. I did not find any grammatical errors in it. Hence, it was exceptionally well-edited.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is a captivating book. Also, I can hardly wait to pick up the next book in the series.
I recommend this book to people who enjoy fantasy books.
