Review of Terms of Service
Author Craig W. Stanfill published a fictional book titled Terms of Service. The science fiction novel is set in a hypothetical society in which the development and use of artificial intelligence are standard. It illustrates how humans will likely develop technologically in the not-too-distant future and how they will interact and grow as a result of the use of artificial intelligence that is currently being developed in the modern world. It illuminates the political underpinnings of using artificial intelligence as well as how it will affect the average person's daily life and surroundings, such as his privacy, access to healthcare, transportation, entertainment, and food. The book sheds light on a variety of topics, including self-discovery, mental health, addiction to drugs and alcohol, as well as love.
This is a book with a lot of suspense, rather than one about battle or action. It introduces Kim, or Kimberly, the main character, who lives in a futuristic society where robots and artificial intelligence (AI) are used to carry out daily tasks. Kim works in the area of artificial intelligence manufacturing, which teaches machines how to communicate with people for such daily tasks as clothes, food, transportation, etc. The fact that one's social position in that society is defined by their actions or conduct didn't help, even if she is perfectly capable of doing her work. She does, however, have days when she is frustrated and angry. She started reflecting on her life and the decisions she had made up to that point after receiving a promotion. The reason for being human and the meaning of being are also topics covered in this book. This book sheds light on potential risks and benefits, if I may say so, in a future where artificial intelligence is integrated and people rely on it for daily tasks, as well as on the corruption of the ruling elite and the authority and influence they would have over the average person.
The author provided leeway for readers to use their imaginations and form their conclusions, which was one of the few aspects of the book that I found to be nice. How the characters' personalities are put together, as well as their setting, what they do, and why, was another nice aspect of the book. I also loved how the author explained how the "political elite" and corruption affected historical and contemporary events and incidents in the modern world.
If not for the extraneous details or additions the author made, such as the baseball scene and the lack of character development for some characters, there was hardly a part of the book I didn't appreciate.
I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The book was fantastic to read, exceptionally well-edited, and error-free. I'd recommend it to anybody curious about artificial intelligence (AI) and what a world with AI integration may look like.
