Nexus Tear by Meg Xuemi X is the second book of the Laments of Angels and Dark Chemistry Series. It was published by Silver Wheel Publishing in 2014. The Siren is the first book of this series. The Red Queen is the third book of this series, and it will be released in fall 2015. Her romance novella Dance with Your Enemy has won an International Editorial Award. Nexus Tear is a Science Fiction, Fantasy novel, and it is suitable for young readers. I give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
Lucienne Lam, born to rule as the last of the Sirens has found the TimeDust, an ancient power. This power could prevent her enemies from killing her, only it chose Ashburn (a farm boy) as its host. TimeDust's power keeps forcing Lucienne to get closer to Ashburn and forsake her first love, Vadimir. The Sealers have cursed her family years ago by hiding the fifth ancient element all Sirens vitally need to strengthen their powers. Lucienne's lack of the fifth element will only lead to her inevitable demise. Accordingly, Vladimir, Ashburn and Lucienne try to track down this element and retrieve it before it's too late.
When reading a second book of any series, it's imperative for the author to insert some history or background of the previous novel. Some authors don’t give enough insights on what has happened in the first novel. I didn’t read the first book of this series, and I admit I was a little apprehensive about that, but this author has given sufficient background about the previous book (The Siren), so I didn’t feel confused or left behind. That shows how well she knows her novel and what is important to be constantly known.
Meg is a wonderful storyteller, and her writing is a proof of that. Right from the beginning, the author simply but intricately created a brand new storyline about myths and futuristic technologies that made the reading experience surreal. The plot was a delightful surprise, especially the ending, that I was almost literally glued to the book from start to finish. This author has a brilliant and valiant imagination, and she knows how to expertly show it. Also, I admire the author's ability to create a steady pace for an action filled plot.
I guess what I like the most about this novel is that it has humor, action, romance, adventure, and mystery, all mixed beautifully together. I truly believe that a Fantasy novel is a testament to the author's creativity. If I don't fully escape to the world he or she has created, then the story is not creative enough. I'm confident that this book will give readers a reprieve from their real lives. The themes discussed in this book are vulnerability, first love, sacrifice, honor, friendship and leadership, and all through the book each one of these themes is depicted excellently.
However, I disdain cheating and I don’t approve of it under any circumstances, so I was perpetually anxious about the consequences of the relationship between Lucienne and Ashburn the entire book. Lucienne is supposed to be in a committed relationship with Vladimir, the Czech boy as she calls him, but the TimeDust installed in Ashburn keeps forcing her to get closer to Ashburn both physically and emotionally. It was literally nerve-wracking waiting for the cheating scene to occur or for Vladimir to bust in on them any moment through the book. In my opinion, that is the only flaw I found in this book, and because it's something that is entirely perspective, I refused to give this book a lower rating.
All in all, this is a riveting Fantasy novel and I think it would appeal to readers who would enjoy a Sci Fi adventure with some romance and humor. This book is complete in every sense of the word, so I highly commend the author for her brilliant imagination and her writing skills. I will definitely read the first book of this series, The Siren, and I look forward to reading the third book, The Red Queen.
