Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an intricate blend of science fiction and fantasy, set in the kingdom of Voulhire. The book tells the story of Lord Orlin of Hillport, accused of pedophilia by mage Dalehei Meldorath, and the ensuing events that follow his death. The new lord of Hillport, Meldorath, is known for his unethical use of magic, and when King Wilhelm Arcolo exiles him, he tells the Voulhirians that the mage is dead. Galen Bray inherits his new estate left by his uncle, and the story unfolds, showcasing the various characters' perspectives and their struggles in this magical kingdom.
One of the most positive aspects of the book is the author's focus on character development. The author structures the chapters according to the characters' points of view, which adds to their depth and complexity. The reader is taken on a journey through the different social classes, from working-class people to lords and kings. The story portrays themes such as family life, betrayal, lordship, and violence, all of which add to the book's richness. The blending of science fiction and fantasy is seamless, and the author's descriptions of the physical world and the magical one are compelling. The author doesn't overdo the fantastic elements and provides a reference guide, which is useful for readers unfamiliar with the Voulhire universe.
While the book is rich in detail, some readers may find it challenging to keep track of all the different characters and their back stories. The story can be slow at times, and the descriptions may feel a little heavy-handed for some readers. Additionally, the book's content may not be suitable for everyone, as it deals with sensitive topics such as pedophilia and violence. Overall, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is an engaging and well-written book. The author's character development and the blending of science fiction and fantasy are standout features. The book's pacing may be slow for some, but it is worth sticking with it to fully appreciate the intricate details of the story. The plot twists and sudden attacks keep the reader engaged, and the acts of terrorism by Riva Rohavi are particularly shocking. The editing is also excellent, and I found no errors while reading.
I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. While it has some minor flaws, the overall quality of the story and the depth of the characters more than make up for them.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy stories about mages and lords, particularly those who appreciate well-developed characters. It is a perfect fit for those interested in a lord's duties and the power of magical illusions. However, due to its sensitive content, it is not suitable for a younger audience or those who may find the themes disturbing.
