Thoughts on Game of Thrones series?

Recently I have become interested in reading the Game of Thrones series after becoming an avid fan of the show. Before I buy the books, though, I would love to receive input from others who have already read the books. Any commentary pertaining to the content, style of writing, chapter breakdown, and so on would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
