Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
In We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, three universes exist namely; Alithea, the spirit universe, Caromentis, the magic universe and Cosmos, the physical universe. Lying in the Cosmos is the great city of Voulhire which is the stage for this novel. With extreme originality and an impressive use of words, Matthew Tysz has penned down a highly suspenseful and riveting novel. Overflowing with the intensity of conspiracy, We are Voulhire takes you on an imaginative and suspenseful ride through the lives of various characters with gradually unfolding plots that are guaranteed to keep your eyes glued to each page. On one hand, we have Wilhelm, Voulhire's king, whose desire to see the city of Hillport grow leads him to send his friend, Lord Eldus and his family to Hillport, a city that holds a secret so great that if revealed, it would set the whole city in an uproar. Hillport has suffered greatly at the hands of their past two Lords, will Lord Eldus succeed in his attempts to bring Hillport to greatness in spite of the scars inflicted on the people and the signs of an insurgency by the Riva Rohavi, a dangerous and feared enemy of Voulhire? On the other hand, the story of Galen Bray, an immigrant to Voulhire unfolds. After coming into the inheritance of a great-uncle whom he never knew existed, he makes the long journey to Magnum Caelum, a Voulhirian city, where he finds a new life awaiting him and tries to adjust to it.
We are Voulhire presents a host of characters that can be likened to the brushstrokes of an artist. Though they may seem haphazard and disjointed initially, they blend together, forming a beautiful picture. Considering the simultaneous unfolding of different characters stories, I expected to get confused at some point, but that was never the case. The author did a good job of making it easy to follow along. I also found the book to be quite creative, who would have ever considered dancing soldiers?
The mystery surrounding Hillport's past kept me intrigued, as the author supplied just enough information to whet my appetite for more. I love how aptly the author described scenes and characters. He had me wishing I could see the splendor of the Mianoran knights fully adorned in their armor, riding on their Ramshires, powerful stallions exclusive to the Mianoran knights, and the image of the face of God painted on the ceiling of the Diadem's chantry was another thing I'd have loved to see.
On reading about the sacrifices and decisions that some characters had to make, I was reminded of the saying; "heavy is the head that wears the crown." A lot of responsibility comes with power, while it makes some people thrive, others get drunk with it. I'm quite eager to see what the author whips up in the sequel, I would love to know what happens with Beth who teleports herself from Caromentis to Cosmos, and also, I'd love to see more of Galen Bray, I have a feeling his story is going to be quite the adventure.
Seeing as I have no negative comments about We are Voulhire, and it was impressively edited, I rate it five out of five stars. I would recommend it to lovers of fiction and mystery, I suggest the soft-hearted brace themselves for some unpleasant scenes, but there are just a few of them. I guarantee this is one book you won't regret reading.
