Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz follows the beginnings of many stories taking place in the rich and enchanting land of Voulhire. Galen Bray, a refugee from the war-ridden Land of the Princes, comes into an inheritance from his late great uncle. He sets sail to the town of Magnum Caelum, eager to begin his new life as a blacksmith, but Voulhire is not the peaceful home he hopes it is. In the nearby town of Hillport, Judge Eldus Alderman takes up lordship as he tries to take this simple town to new heights of wealth and prosperity. However, this town’s dark history haunts the new Lord Eldus. Hillport had lost two lords in just one month. In a prison on Lorcia’s Isle, Hillport’s former lord, Meldorath, lies in wait. King Wilhelm of Voulhire attempts to protect his people from the Riva Rohavi, a powerful rebellious organization, but he is met with challenges in the form of the Chancellor of the Mianoran Council, Midius Maido.
The book opens with an action-packed magical duel that sets the tone perfectly. This book is expertly written, from its engaging characters to its beautiful descriptive paragraphs. The history of this world is explained seamlessly throughout the story, striking the perfect balance of understanding and mystery. The book is also unexpectedly funny at times, a welcome break from the more emotional moments. I especially loved the small, playful moments between the Alderman family; they helped anchor the story around the theme of family.
My issues with this book are few and far between. Some of the dialogue sounded a bit contemporary for its setting and characters. For example, the dialogue of the king and other high-ranking members of his court are often just as casual as that of the regular citizens. Also, some of the foreshadowing in the book can be quite heavy-handed. This negatively affected the suspense and pacing of the book, as I could anticipate certain reveals far before necessary.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I think this book was a stellar introduction to this deeply interesting world. If possible, I would rate it 4.5 stars as there were some pacing issues in the middle of the book.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a great fantasy adventure book for those just starting out in the genre and looking for an easy read, while still being a comforting classic story for longtime fans of the genre to appreciate. It is exceptionally well-edited and only briefly touches on adult topics like pedophilia and assault. For these reasons, I would recommend this book to teenagers and adults.
