We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book of a series by Matthew Tysz. Weaved in a time of war, this book covers the different cities and towns in and around the kingdom of Voulhire. Magic is a normal practice but only if it is not abused. Hillport has lost two of its lords in a short space of time. The last lord, Meldorath, left the entire town with fear hanging over their shoulder. He is known as an evil mage and is supposedly dead. However, there are rumors that say he is still alive. This leaves the town anxious. King Wilhelm sends his close friend and renowned judge, Eldus, to be the lord of Hillport in order to manage the situation. Will Lord Eldus be able to resuscitate the economy of Hillport? Will the rebels known as the Riva Rohavi succeed in instilling more fear in the lives of those living in Hillport?

There are ongoing civil wars in the Lands of Princes. A young man, Galen Bray, finds himself being chased by soldiers. He holds a piece of paper that grants him passage into the ship that is headed towards Soulhire, the capital of Voulhire. He arrives an immigrant into a small town called Magnum Caelum. His uncle, whom he has never met, sent a party searching for him on his death bed. He inherits his forge and everything else he owned. Does this seemingly-nobody have any major role to play in the wars Voulhire faces?

Matthew Tysz produced a great storyline. I loved how he developed his storyline from what seemed to be a bunch of unrelated pieces. His execution of plots was superb. It allowed me to put faces to every character that I read. His character development was also on point. I also loved how he used both first-person and third-person narratives. The two narratives allowed me to visualize every plot while reading. It almost felt like watching a movie. I loved how nothing seemed too obvious. Every time I thought things would play out a certain way, they always played out differently. I loved the suspense from the prologue itself. I had to read deeper into the book to fully understand Galen's role. Tysz did a good job at maintaining the suspense. The author provided an index at the end of the book. I found this very helpful because I did not understand most of the terms that I came across.

I found nothing to dislike about the book. From the prologue upto the very last chapter I was captivated at all times. The book was exceptionally edited. I did not find any error in the book which made reading very easy and more enjoyable. The author's writing style and ability to keep a reader hooked to the book was on point. This book deserves nothing less than 5 out of 5 stars.

I invite lovers of science fiction to try this book. It will not disappoint. Although the book was not listed in this specific genre, lovers of historical fiction should also try the book. Sensitive readers should take note that there are graphical scenes of violence that are described vividly. I recommend the book to a mature audience. Personally, I am looking forward to reading all the books in the series.
