Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fictional book that mixes drama, action, and suspense to create a masterpiece. Galen Bray is from the Land of Princes, a land filled with hunger, poverty, and war. He gets invited to Voulhire by his uncle, who is a blacksmith. After a week at sea, he arrives safely at Magnum Caelum.
On arrival, he learns of his uncle's death. Being his uncle's only surviving family, he inherits his house, money, and forge. He meets Rowan, his uncle's enforcer, who helps him settle in. They go to the forge, where Galen finds a book his uncle left for him. The book is a manual that teaches one all there is to know about blacksmithing. Galen, with the help of Rowan, starts learning the trade. Galen's arrival coincides with Eldus being appointed as the ruler of Hillport. What role do they play in each other's lives? Grab a copy to find out.
I enjoyed reading this book. The author's storytelling is very captivating and draws readers in. I liked the world-building; I visualized the scenes in my head due to the author's vivid descriptions. Although the beginning was dull, I like how the author took his time to introduce the characters. Due to the slow build-up, I understood the characters better, and I was able to understand the thought process behind their decisions. I like that the story is told from multiple perspectives; this aids comprehension because readers can get different views about the story.
Due to the careful introduction of the characters, there were no fillers, and each character had a role to play. My favorite character was Galen; he was honest, diligent, and eager to learn. What I liked the most about him was his willingness to learn. An example of this was when he first arrived at Magnu Caelum. He quickly used the instructions left behind by his uncle to learn blacksmithing. In my opinion, this sets him out from other characters. I also liked Rowan's character; he was funny, creative, and loyal to Galen. We all need a friend like Rowan in our lives.
The only negative aspect I found was the slow start. However, it isn't enough for me to remove a star. I happily give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I found no errors, indicating it was well-edited. Being the first book of the franchise, it ended on a cliffhanger, setting the tone for the subsequent books to follow. I recommend this book to those who enjoy sci-fi, mystery, action, and suspense-filled books.
