An end to the Thrill by Varun Kumar is a very suspenseful and interesting small stories collection book. With only 43 pages and 9 short stories, I was curious to see how the author was able to execute so many stories with so little pages. Yet with no main theme or characters, each story feels like a new book as Varun takes the reader on countless adventures and scenarios in each one.
An enjoyable aspect of the book is Varun Kumar’s imagination and how each short story is different and unique in its own way. As soon as you begin to read one, the story begins to take you on a roller coaster ride of events and details until the very last page where everything ties together and makes sense. His concepts and intricate plots made for an interesting and exciting read. Each story had my attention and left me reading continuously to see what the ending would be and what new experience would be waiting for me on the next page.
While there are many good aspects of the book, there is room for some improvement as well. The short stories are full of details and exciting scenes, but all of them feel rushed. Before I could begin to identify with the plots and the characters, the story would be coming to an end. The author has a great sense of creating stories that are unique and introducing new concepts, but it can sometimes be lost in the fast pace of the story line. Also some of the fast forward chapters at the end of some of the stories felt out of place and unneeded.
As a writer, I think it would also be beneficial to remember to trust the reader. Where the reader was told how the characters felt, using details would have done the same thing and made the reader even more enticed into the story. For instance in Andrew, the main character describes Sarah as looking mad and bored. As the story progresses and her actions and body language are described, the reader will sense something is wrong on their own without being told. This is just one example of many where this occurred. While it did not take away from the book, towards the end I begin to stop reading so far into the story or the details because I knew the author would just tell me what the characters were feeling.
Overall I think the book has much potential and is still something most readers may have never read before. The stories are all unique and the imagination and the style of how each is told makes the book still a very nice read. For that I give it 3 out of 4 stars.
