While Sara Langston was a witch her life hadn't exactly held anything overly exciting in her seventeen years of life. That is, until one night when she responds to a distress signal and ends up witnessing a murder of a witch alongside her best friend. When they report this to the Guardian, the witch that protects all of the witches, she writes it off as nothing, but Sara feels there is more to it. Before she even has a chance to prepare herself, Sara is thrown into a fight much bigger than she ever would've thought possible leaving her to wonder if she is truly ready for the journey ahead.

As soon as I read the description for the book I knew I had to read it and the story did not disappoint. The overall story did feel a little rushed, but it still flowed well and I was never left truly in the dark, floundering around by myself to try and understand what was going on. For the most part the writing was very well done with great detail, but there were grammar errors such as words missing in a sentence and spelling errors, though nothing too horrible as to detract from the book. There were also places in the book where the author fell into some kind of sentence fragment trap and there would be one or two paragraphs in a row that would just be filled to the brim with them, making it a little frustrating to read.

The story was written with a very colorful cast of characters and they were each truly unique as the author made sure to give them their own weird little quirks to be like real people like Jane's strange addiction to milk. There were some times though where it felt like the characters weren't doing any growing and it would make me frustrated with them as it felt like there was absolutely no way their views could be even slightly altered, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing as people in real life can be exactly like that. Some of the dialogue felt a little awkward and forced, but overall I enjoyed reading about all the characters and I have actually been left wanting more details about them and their life and wanting to see them react to everyday life.

As previously stated when I read the description of the book it just hooked my attention and it didn't disappoint me. The action never ceased to stop and instead of leaving me feeling overwhelmed, it just made me want to eat up the book all the more and I felt the tension during it all. The author's descriptions of the settings were just beautiful and I could easily picture exactly where they were. While I obviously can't use magic myself, I felt like I could understand how the characters were able to use by his descriptions of what they felt and what they were doing physically when they used their magic, which just made it all the more exciting for me. Again, the story did feel a little rushed, leaving me to wish it had gone on longer, but it only left me forcing myself to try and read the book slower that I could make it last longer.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. While not the greatest book ever written, it was still a very enjoyable read and I found myself having a hard time putting it down. The characters were interesting, the settings detailed and beautiful, and the story never got stale as it always made sure to add twists and turns. It implemented some different ideas into the category of witchcraft books and I enjoyed that the author didn't write it be exactly like all the other ones out there. If you're looking for something that is just like the Harry Potter series I may not highly recommend this, but still think you should give it a read as it was a fun journey that I won't regret having read.

Nice review! Even if it's not "the greatest book ever written", it still seems like it had enough to keep you interesting. I love books that have a detailed setting.
