Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, written by Mathew Tysz, is a captivating fantasy novel set in a medieval world filled with magic and adventure. The story follows two main characters, Galen and Lord Eldus, as they navigate their own journeys that ultimately lead to their paths crossing. Galen is an unlikely heir to his great uncle's blacksmith business, but with the help of his great uncle's executor, Rowan, and a magical manual, he begins to learn the trade. Lord Eldus is a newly appointed lord on a mission to rebuild and revitalize Hillport after the reign of two unsavory leaders. As the story progresses, alliances are formed, battles are fought, and secrets are revealed, making for an engaging read from start to finish.
One of the most positive aspects of the book is Tysz's ability to create a fully realized world that feels both familiar and unique. The medieval setting is well-crafted and immersive, and the addition of magic adds an extra layer of intrigue to the story. The multiple perspectives also provide a well-rounded understanding of the world and its characters, allowing the reader to fully invest in their journeys. Additionally, the themes of trust and hope are skillfully woven throughout the narrative, providing a satisfying emotional payoff.
While the book is well-written, the lack of development for some of the characters, particularly Galen, can be a bit frustrating. More background information would have helped to flesh out the characters and make them feel more relatable. Additionally, some of the action scenes can be a bit confusing, making it difficult to fully understand what's happening.
I give the book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. While the book has its flaws, it's an enjoyable and engaging read that is well worth the investment. The world-building is impressive, and the themes of trust and hope make for a satisfying emotional payoff. Additionally, Tysz's writing is well-crafted and engaging, making for a compelling read.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre and is looking for an engaging and immersive read. Fans of Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings will find plenty to enjoy in this novel. While the book is appropriate for teenagers and up, younger readers may find some of the more violent scenes to be too intense. Overall, it's a well-crafted and enjoyable debut novel that is sure to leave readers wanting more.
