Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
A young man looking for a new opportunity migrates to other lands leaving behind the only life he has known of poverty and violence caused by war. In this new country, he will be dazzled by things that its inhabitants take for granted, while in turn generating empathy by innocently giving his generosity and excessive concern for others. However, something dark lurks inside of him.
A king who believed in the world and its beauty, despite the cruelest realities arising from political and economic interests, the violence of those who dissent, and the vilest interests of the people: the evil itself that surrounds everything. A king who doubts and cannot fully trust his own inner circle, especially the corrupt and vicious leader of the Mianoran Order of Knights, tasked, among other things, with choosing the king's successor. Added to this is a succession of lies that weigh on his soul and now follow him closer than he expected.
A powerful wizard, perhaps the most powerful in the world, was betrayed and imprisoned by his friend, the king. Isolated on an island and surrounded by a naval blockade, soldiers, and an army of guardian mages, he waits for the perfect moment to make his next move, but probably not in this dimension.
Along with these characters, this story accompanies other colorful characters ranging from nobles and representatives of the kingdom to clerics and workers whose appearances and interactions are key to the development of relationships and intrigues that make this magical world so addictive.
The novel is set in a world created by Tysz, where the mundane intelligently coexists with faith, technology, science, and magic, blending the material world with the magical universe of Caromentis. The kingdom of Voulhire is described as a golden age full of promise but surrounded by uncertainties, threats, and dangers, especially under the hand of the Riva Rohavi, the extremists who seize any opportunity to spread anxiety, terror, and death in any corner of the kingdom where the offering of prosperity appears.
I rate “We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies” by Matthew Tsyz 5 out of 5. With no errors and impeccably edited, the narration is carried out, from time to time by Galen, the young immigrant who has promised to do the right thing before the people who have welcomed him, and in the third person when going through the adventures and misadventures of the other characters.
The descriptions are in their proper measure, accompanying the story. They are careful without being overbearing and subtly wrap you in the story. In general, it seemed to me that the setting is a strong point of this novel, not only in relation to the descriptions of the kingdoms but also to the political and religious context, the spells, the intrigues, etc.
I found it a captivating novel with a fascinating and easy-to-digest plot, combining realistic elements with fantasy to the point of being difficult to tell apart once you immerse yourself in the story.
Much more than a fantasy novel, it is a representation of the desire for power that we live in the real world, which has turned out to be entertaining and enjoyable, full of adventure, friendship, and magic, and above all the mystery that Galen generates for me, the young and well-intentioned immigrant, and what I suspect he will contribute to the kingdom of Voulhire and his people, which will undoubtedly develop in the following sequels.
I recommend it for those who want to read a fresh and entertaining story despite its intrigues, magic, humor, and adventures. Without a doubt, it is for all those who feel passionate about the fantasy genre without caring about having to wait for the next installments to continue the thread of the story and its development.
