Queen of Shadows by Dianne Sylvan

Post by dempseybelle001 »

Queen of Shadows by Dianne Sylvan opens up the world of vampires to a whole new dimension. When people think of vampires they think of shadows, secrecy, coffins. Sylvan's world of vampires engulfs all of the natural world, government workings, and directly involves it with the vampire governance. She does this all through Miranda and Deven. Miranda is a young woman who is struggling with her own special talent that is slowly killing her. Her only way to control herself is while sitting on stage performing and soaking in the energy of the crowd. Off stage her gift controls her, leaving her with no peace of mind, literally.
Deven is the Prime of the Southern States working towards bringing the vampires into the 21st century. He's beyond your typical tech savvy, macho man. In one of his first acts as Prime he makes it illegal to kill humans while feeding. As a vampire outlawing what other vampires view as normal feeding has caused tension and risks of rebellion, revenge, and even a coup de'tat. Deven takes Miranda in and teaches Miranda to harness and control her powers but will it be enough when he lets her leave the nest or has she become too close to the Prime that she is in danger by association and maybe in danger of love?
One of the things I can't stand the most in a book is when there is a good plot line that is ruined at the end by romance. However, Sylvan keeps that from happening. The romance and the action in the book go hand in hand neither out doing each other. Miranda proves herself over and over through trial and hard work that she isn't ready to roll over and die. There are romantic scene but it never takes away quick pace action. I give this work a 4 out of 4 stars.
