We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz thrusts readers immediately into magic, intrigue, and mass murder. In Castle Hillport, a powerful mage named Meldorath slowly barges in and — quite easily — kills his way through knights, archers, soldiers, and servants to arrest the town's then lord, Orlin, for his perverted crimes against the children. Across the seas, on what’s called the Land of the Princes, a man named Galen Bay desperately boards a ship which would take him far away from his war torn homeland towards the country of Voulhire, a land of freedom and peace. How will the fates of these two characters intertwine, and how will they affect the future of Voulhire?
I love this novel, and I think it is extremely underrated. I can’t wait for more people to read it! I’m not usually into fantasy because I find most fantasy books to be unnecessarily complicated and boring. However, I loved We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz, and I can’t wait to read the next book in this nine-part series. This first book perfectly introduces the readers to the characters, the lay of the land, and the novel's world — or should I say worlds? It does so without ever being boring. In fact, so many things are happening that I’m certain it will keep readers gripping their seats in suspense, shock, and anticipation.
There are a lot of characters, but they are all interesting, distinct, and mysterious. Tysz gives us enough insight into each character without ever revealing too much, and it is brilliant because now I can’t wait to pick up the next book to know who the true heroes and villains are. With so many things happening, and with so many characters to keep track of, the story should be confusing — it should be too much — but it’s not! I think that the readers will actually want more after they turn the last page. So, props to Tysz’ brilliant and extremely engaging writing, as well as his fantastic world building!
There’s really nothing I don’t like about this book. It’s the first fantasy novel I finished with gusto in a long while. It exceeded all of my expectations and deserves a rating of 5 out 5 stars!
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy dark fantasy, as well as those who, like me, might have already given up on the genre but would like to give it another try.
