Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Magic may seem like a myth, but what if it were real? What if there was magic in our present-day society? We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz centers on a world with magic and mages.
Galen Bray is a young man from the land of princes, a land that has been at war for over a decade. He is invited by his dying uncle to claim his inheritance. Galen would make his trip to Voulhire and meet Rowan, who happens to be responsible for his immigration. Eldus Alderman is the new lord of Hillport, sent by the king to bring development to Hillport, a town that has been recently traumatized by tragedies. Eldus arrives in Hillport with his family and gets to work immediately. He is also interested in the magical realm and seeks a way to protect his people from evil forces. Lord Meldorath is the most powerful and feared mage in the whole of Hillport, and due to the atrocities he committed, the king sanctioned his execution. Although Meldorath may be dead, some citizens of Voulhire have a hard time believing it, as they still cower at the name of the dark lord. But could they be right? Could this mage still be alive? If so, then what would be his next plan for these great citizens of Voulhire? There's only one way to find out, and that's by reading this book.
Although the protagonist of this book was obvious, it still didn't limit the author from spreading the spotlight equally on all major characters. If Galen Bray's chapters weren't told from the first-person perspective, one would think that he wasn't the lead character. I enjoyed the fact that this book had magic, and the author spared no words in describing its diversity. My favorite type of mage were the bio mages; the idea that someone could control the human body and bend it to his will is quite fascinating.
I didn't find anything to dislike about this book. It was well written, and I'd be happy to read it again and again. This is only the first book in the series, so I am eager to read the next book and see what's in store for the characters.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars, and I don't see any reason why I shouldn't give it a full rating. There were no errors of any sort in this book; it was excellently edited. I recommend this book to people who love reading sci-fi-themed books and also to people who have always marveled at magic and its existence.
