Review of Terms of Service
Craig W. Stanfill's novel, Terms of Service, depicts a future society where every aspect of human life is under the control of Artificial Intelligence. The story follows Kim, the protagonist, as she navigates through her daily routine, providing readers with a glimpse into the lives of people living in this tightly monitored society. Kim is stripped of agency, with AI dictating what she eats, the kind of music she listens to, who she dates, and even whom she has sex with. Breaking any of the ten rules, also known as "terms," could result in harsh punishment, including hard labor and a reduction in one's social cohesion rating. The rating system determines the quality of one's living conditions in demarcated districts, with each district having unique features that make it more or less desirable than the others.
Kim tried her best to abide by the rules. Her wits helped her to excel and attain enviable heights. Despite starting together with some of her peers like Shan, Kim enjoyed some special privileges. However, everything took a turn when she and Shan embarked on a trip that started with a ride in a park. The things they saw and the people they met aroused some curiosity in her to the level that she began to seek clarity. Will she be punished? Will she get the needed clarity? Will the authorities hide the truth from her? You need to read this book to find out all these.
One of the remarkable aspects of the book Terms of Service that I love is its ability to immerse readers in a futuristic world that feels both plausible and unsettling. As a work of fiction, it allows readers to imagine how the future of humanity might be shaped by technological advancements, and the author's creative and imaginative skills bring this world-building to life. For example, the use of crypto as the currency of the AI-controlled society depicted in the book is a reflection of the current revolution being made in our world in terms of having a universal currency. This aspect of the book demonstrates how the author has incorporated current trends and predictions about the future of technology into his storytelling.
Additionally, the strict use of "she" and "her" in the book can be seen as a reflection of the ongoing conversations around gender identification and inclusivity in our society. This aspect of the book challenges traditional gender norms and highlights the importance of considering alternative perspectives and identities in our discussions about the future.
After thoroughly reading this book, I have concluded that it was well worth my time. The interactions between the characters were captivating and realistic, resulting in a fast-paced storyline that kept me hooked. The book encouraged me to ponder over the impact of AI on my life and how I can limit its influence. Additionally, it made me contemplate the trade-offs between freedom, privacy, and their costs. I have to commend the exceptional editing done on the book. I didn't spot any errors. I cannot think of a single aspect of the book that I disliked. Hence, I am rating it 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to science fiction enthusiasts. It provides insightful commentary on the increasing influence of AI on humanity as technology continues to advance. However, I must caution that the book contains a significant amount of erotic content that may not be suitable for non-adult readers. Nonetheless, for mature readers who are curious about the subject matter, it will make for an engaging and thought-provoking read.
