Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
A whole new multiverse is waiting for you to discover in the novel, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz. Following is the briefest summary of the first novel about this colossal, historical-fantasy world.
You will be introduced to a marvelous, fantasy multiverse consisting of three universes: Alithea, the spirit universe, Cosmos, the physical universe, and Caromentis, the magic universe. In Cosmos, magic is practiced by people called mages, and magical metals can be found, it came to Cosmos from Caromentis. Voulhire resides in Cosmos. The capital is Soulhire. King Wilhelm Arcolo is the monarch, under his reign, the kingdom entered a golden age. Former general, and friend of King Willhelm, Dalehei Meldorath, is a dominant mage, he killed Orlen, the city of Hillport's Lord, and declared himself the new Lord. As a result, King Willhelm captured him, and set former judge, Eldus Alderman as the new Lord. Both Willhelm and Eldus had great plans under which Hillport would become the center of a great shipping network that would encompass the southern waterfront. But can they achieve that?
Midius Maido: Chancellor of the Mianoran council. Young, immoral, and extravagant. Whether the heir appointed by the king was to be confirmed or denied rested with the Mianoran council, their centuries-old oath to put an end to the violent insurgents, known as Riva Rohavi, was one of their greatest excuses for gaining such power. And the Mianoran knights are the most rigid in Voulhire.
Lullabies, a nation inhabited by shadowy creatures. There wicked Emperor suspects that his four sons harmonize to overthrow him, so he put an evil smart plan that locks his four sons in a loop of civil war in the Lands of the Princes. And the protagonist of the novel, Galen Bray, a recent immigrant from the Lands of the Princes, is eager to leave his old life behind and start over in Voulhire. He was saved from his war-torn homeland by the executor of his uncle’s estate, Rowan.
Mr. Matthew Tysz created a robust multiverse with attention to detail in every concept, economy, history, geography, language, culture, and religion. This is an exquisite saga that would make a chart-topping movie series. It is unique and original, and you will not find chapters here because this novel is just chapter one in the story of Voulhire. In terms of the novel's characters, I liked the morals, struggles, and fears of King Willhelm, and as the story goes on, Galen's character shows that he emulates people who achieve success by being of value. In spite of the fact that Rowan appears simple, at first sight, he is a sophisticated character. Galen and Rowan's conversations and adventures were elegant and humorous, it’s what I enjoyed the most in the novel. The Old One, a character that appeared in just the scene of Galen’s journey on the boat to Voulhire, was captivating. Another character that has great anticipation is “Demetrius” a monk who is helping Galen and Rowan to discover the nature of a magic rock.
Throughout the book, there were many unique, thrilling, and well-written scenes, such as Lord Meldorath's havoc, Riva Rohavy's battles, and Alabaster's practice of biomagic. The debate between Lord Eldus and (heius priest) Bartrus, which take place on a balcony facing the ocean in a restaurant at Hillport, was gratifying. Also, the conversation between Indara, “the vice-chancellor of Mianora”, and Alabaster de lasette, “former mentor of Dalehei Meldorath”, was awesome. All the scenes are highly visualized in described detail, this puts you in the mood and place for the ultimate imaginary experience. Hillport castle holds a lot of mystery, and it is waiting to be explored in the next chapters.
Galen's landing from the boat at the port of Magnum Caelum was a heartwarming and wonderful scene, a painting by words. The pace of the story varies in harmony between the scenes. And I loved the names of the characters, it is ironic that the terms of the rivals are the most adorable, like Lullabies, Meldorath, Alabaster, and Riva Rohavi.
The only thing that I disliked was the Layout of the text being fully Justified, which means variable spacing between words, it looks strange and uncomfortable while reading. In this regard, the left justification would be better.
This book was exceptionally edited, I didn’t recognize any typos, and because of all the above, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars, I enjoyed reading this novel, and I’m looking forward to the next chapters in this saga. So I recommend it to all fantasy fiction history lovers of all ages. Also, political thriller lovers will esteem it. One more thing, that I don’t have big issues with but I must mention, is the bloody nature of the battle scenes in the novel.
