Review of Terms of Service
Craig W. Stanfill's novel, Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice, is a science fiction. Every aspect of people's existence is under the control and supervision of artificial intelligence. Kim, a rising star at the Artificial Intelligence Company, whose job it is to train and manage AIs, is the main character of this book. Your social standing will increase if you abide by the rules and report those who break them. After a mishap, Kim's orderly life spins out of control, causing her to learn facts that could endanger the corrupt institutions of society and upend her way of life.
There are many excellent aspects of this novel, but I want to focus on world-building first. It was intriguing. I've read a number of dystopian novels, but this one's picture of the world completely surprised me. It explored several facets of life and demonstrated how corrupted they have become. We don't often get the chance to read a fictional work on artificial intelligence from a writer who holds a Ph.D. in the field. In this work of science fiction, the author infused the text with insights from his career as a computer scientist and businessman. Even if I don't know much about these things, it's obvious that Stanfill is an expert on how the systems in the world operate. A few simple life tips were also offered, such as the idea that having a free choice is the best aspect of being a human. The story has a gratifying finish at the book's end. It made me want to read it again. The way events were being shadily managed behind the scenes in Kim's world is what creates the most suspense.
Do you believe our elders are exaggerating when they claim that our generation has become a slave to technology every time you become immersed in your phone? You might learn otherwise from this book. What if the technology you focus on as you eat, travel, and hang out with family and friends was spying on you? What if they are watching every move you make and keeping track of any differences for later use? What if the technology you're meant to control has been controlling you? I love how the narrative brought up these questions in my mind.
I did not encounter errors while reading this book. It was exceptionally well-edited. I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because of two reasons. A brilliant sense of humor is a trait of the author. Even lengthy technical descriptions of AI struck me as interesting because of the author's style.
Both fiction and nonfiction readers should consider reading this book, in my opinion. Even though this is a fictional universe, it felt so genuine. I couldn't wait to read the next chapter to learn more about Kim. I recommend this book to readers of science fiction.
