Review of Terms of Service
The engaging book, Terms of service, by Craig W. Stanfill, takes place in an A.I. guided futuristic dystopian setting. In the beginning, we learn a bit of the backstory of the main character, Kim. It doesn’t take long to learn that this world is strongly regulated by A.I., guided by companies in high power. Everything, down to what they are allowed to eat, wear, their occupation, and intimacy is highly controlled. One slip up, and there are irreputable prices to pay. From the beginning, we can see that Kim feels something is amiss, though they are not sure what, exactly. They do know, however, an uncanny feeling of emptiness, not well managed by vodka, though the attempt is made many times. As we move through the book, Kim experiences a variety of curious events, including a rather adventurous, if not scary ordeal, outside the realm of the strongly enforced rules. Accompanied by a longtime friend, Shan, they both knew this would end badly, there was no escaping the reality that the A.I. inevitably knew they were up to no good. Alas, returning from this off-kilter expedition, everything changed for both individuals. Kim was officially sucked into the abyss of secrets of the A.I. with seemingly no way out of this mess. Shan certainly faced her own challenges due to this ordeal. As they each learn more of their seemingly inescapable reality, the story moves on at an enriching, bingeworthy pace.
The deeper I dove into this book, the more I found to enjoy. Starting with the enriching character and world background, I was instantly intrigued with the need to learn more of this fascinating dystopia. It didn’t take too long for things to really start heating up, further encasing my need to learn even more. I further appreciate the inclusion of varying characters, all seemingly so normal, yet completely stuck and confused in a society built of A.I.’s and regulations. I must also add that I loved the many instances of foreshadowing, as this caught my attention by sprinkling the tiniest breadcrumbs of what was to come.
Though the book was immaculate in my eyes, one point I’d like to note is that the start is a touch slow. While establishing important information about the world this takes place in, it is hard to get into if you’re not prepared to invest in the backstory first.
All in all, I rate this book 5 out of 5 . I thoroughly enjoyed this book, each and every event made me want to keep going, to find out what happens next. Though the beginning was slow, this was not nearly enough to prevent me from giving this the best rating.
I would recommend this book for anyone with an interest in futuristic dystopias, and especially for those who are intrigued by the role A.I. may play in our future.
