Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book of a series by Matthew Tysz. Voulhire is a great kingdom under the rule of King Wilhelm. It has many great cities and towns of different economic developments. Magic and science are an integral part of its history. The book opens with trouble brewing in Hillport. Meldorath has come to challenge Lord Orlin for his position with outrageous accusations. Meldorath practises dark magic and is feared by all. When Voulhire intervenes, it remains unclear whether he is dead or not. This leaves the people of Hillport living in fear. King Wilhelm appoints his friend and former judge, Eldus, to become the new lord of Hillport in order to clean up the mess. Will he succeed?
In what seems to be a totally unrelated event, war in the Land of the Princes ends up with Galen Bray being chased by soldiers. He holds a mysterious document that grants him passage onto a ship he finds on the dock. It leaves him in Magnum Caelum. Is he just an ordinary citizen, or does he have a role to play in Voulhire? What does the document he carries say?
When I read how this book was a result of the author's imaginary world, I did not think much would come out of it. Tysz imagination is wild and creative. I loved how he described Voulhire so vividly you would think it actually exists. The author's character development was mind-blowing. There are a lot of characters in this book and it is very easy for this to become confusing. Tysz made use of a list of characters at the beginning of the book with the name of the character and their role. In addition, the detailed descriptions towards the development of these characters made one character distinctively different from the other. Likewise, the towns were just as many and the author's ability to keep everything separate was unquestionable.
I was intrigued by the fact that Matthew Tysz intended to write eight more sequels to this series. I thought it was impossible. I loved how he left out details from this book that I think would make up for the storyline in the next sequel. This left me with no doubt that he can do it and I look forward to reading all the following books. I loved how consistent the suspense was and how awestruck I was while reading. The prologue kept me wondering what the storyline was about.
Tysz writing style was brilliant and captivating. He made use of dialogs and both first and third-person narratives. His vocabulary was professional. The book contained no error that I could find, proof of exceptional editing. I loved everything about this book and it deserves a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to lovers of fantasy with a bit of historical war. I also recommend it to those who like reading about magic. I advise a mature audience to read this book. Sensitive readers should take note of the graphic descriptions of violence in the book.
