Review of Frustrating Fascination
Debra McKenzie's Frustrating Fascination is a science-fiction work that explores the lives of LGBT individuals. Sean is troubled by his wife Marina's choice to leave him for another woman. He is perplexed as to how his wife came to make this choice. He despises homosexuality and wishes Marina had married another guy instead. Alex, who has experienced gender transition, irritates him. He also distances himself from his homosexual buddy Bruce because he does not want to be affiliated with gays. Sean came across an antique store while searching for a birthday gift for his mother and purchased a mirror that he knew she would like. He changed his mind, however, and chose to retain it. This marked a transformation in his life; he lost interest in women and instead got attracted to men. His position at the workplace changes, and he is demoted. It turns out that he is the one who divorced his wife due to his sexual orientation. His new sexual preference becomes so apparent that he cannot conceal it in public. Something occurs during one of his outings with Bruce, creating another twist in his life.
Debra's choice to come out and handle a delicate subject that has sparked heated reactions in today's world impressed me. LGBT has become so divisive that some people support it while others oppose it. The book also concentrated on the main subject and how everything discussed affected it. The book is thought-provoking; it switches between the natural world and the world of fantasy. The use of rhetorical questions elicited even more thought from me. Another plus was the ease with which the language was used. Debra used simple words and phrases, making the novel easy to comprehend. There were only a few characters, and I understood them all. The book was well organized; there were four main parts with brief chapters, further simplifying it. The work was professionally edited, and I only noted a few grammatical mistakes.
One aspect of this novel that failed to please me was how quickly the characters became enraged and how fighting was their preferred method of resolving disagreements. Even so, changes from one realm to the next were fraught with violence.
The one negative mentioned above was minor. Furthermore, the book had a lot of positives, with only a few grammatical mistakes that did not affect my rating. As a result, I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
I urge LGBT people and activists to read the novel because it accurately depicts their experiences. Those interested in LGBT issues are encouraged to read the story because there is more information. Minors should avoid reading the novel because it includes explicit erotic scenes.
